Travels in Turkey: Istanbul

A city both ancient and modern at the crossroads of Asia, Europe and the Holy Land.

Istanbul/ Constantinople/ Byzantion has been a great imperial capital for over 16 centuries. Founded in the Stone Age to staddle the important Bosphorus River trade route between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean, this city has hosted Troy, Mycenaeans, Phrygia, Romans, Goths, Constantine, Justinian, Slavs, Arabs, Avars, Bulgars, Persians, Crusaders, Ottomans, Sultans, Ataturk.

Today's Istanbul welcomes tourists to the Roman Hippodrome with it's 1500 BC Egyptian obelisk from Luxor, Roman Emperor Justinian's 6th century AD Basilica Cistern constructed with reused Classical marble columns, Byzantium's 1,400 year old Haghia Sophia, magnificent 16th century mosques including the Blue Mosque and Suleymaniye Camii, Ottoman's mid 15th century Topkapi Palace, serene cemeteries like Pierre Loti, the truly labyrinthine Grand Bazaar and the brilliantly colorful Spice Bazaar, the treasureful Istanbul Archaeological Museum and, of course, tea.
