event flyer

Journey through eight archetypal landscapes: Ocean, the Keeper; Desert, the Determiner, Mountain, the Giveaway; Lake, the Mirror; Island, the Refuge; Cave, the Place of Initiation; Forest, the Protector and Provider; and River, which runs through and connects all.

Based in the ancient aboriginal wisdom of the Native Americans and Celtic Earth Mysteries, this workshop will feature in-depth exploration, easy meditation exercises, and fun visualization games. Like the North American Medicine Wheel, we learn wholeness by first isolating each direction and each land type into its specific qualities. Every landscape has unique characteristics which teach skills to recognize and create nourishing environments. Engaging our imagination in serious yet playful activities, we will explore our personal relationship to place and evoke the natural order and elemental power of archetypal landscapes. Through inspiring words, stunning imagery and contemplative music, we will travel the terrain of inner and outer landscapes, creating maps for our life’s path. Calling on travel experiences and sensory memory, we will dowse from the center of each land type to better focus our questions, evaluate answers, and unify our quest. Our workshop will conclude with ‘Mystical Britain,’ a presentation of slides and music of ancient sanctuaries in England, Scotland, and Brittany showing ancient site placement in honored landscape. Dress comfortably and bring a journal for writing and/or drawing. Art materials and handouts provided.

Join us for an extraordinary day-long conference on the Dark Mother and the Divine Feminine. China Galland, Conference Director, author, and founder of Images of Divinity, has gathered a wide range of theologians, writers, scholars, activists, artists, teachers, musicians, and performers to help us discover a variety of ways to encounter this potent symbol of transformation.

Known cross-culturally under many names, this Dark Mother is re-emerging as a source of wisdom, creativity, and liberation. She is known as Our Lady of Guadalupe or Tonantzin in Mexico, the Mother and Patron of all the Americas, or as the Black Madonna in European Catholicism, Isis in Egyptian Africa, Crow Mother in the Hopi American Indian tradition, Tara in Tibetan Buddhism, Kali in Hinduism, Erzuli Danto in Vodun, Yemaya in Yoruban Africa, and Oya in Brazilian Candomble. This beneficent, towering dark female divinity appears as a powerful symbol of healing, diversity, fierce compassion and of the Earth itself. As the national Patron of Brazil, she is known as Aparecida, the one who appears, and is called the Mother of the Excluded. (conference details)

Multimedia artist and fine art photographer Cindy Pavlinac presents slides from her Photographs of Power and Grace Image Library, including sacred places in the USA and Europe, black Madonnas in France, and from her recent trek to Meryemana, Mother Mary's House in Ephesus, Turkey, with its holy well and 3 Black Madonnas.

Labyrinths in Health Care

Cindy A. Pavlinac, MA: Archetypal symbolic designs such as labyrinths can function as visual examples of healthy relationships. Through the symmetry of sacred geometry, labyrinths invite us into the mythic levels of mind, tapping deep repositories of human memory and experience. Traveling as a pilgrim orients us to the essence and interconnectedness of all life and strengthens our sense of greater purpose and global community. Using original photography and music to evoke the sense of place, we will journey to sacred landscapes in Europe and North America to follow a meandering path from ancient sanctuaries to modern expressions of labyrinths in places of nature, worship, and healing, with special attention to labyrinths currently in use at hospitals and other health care facilities.

We will finish at the atrium labyrinth for a group walk.

A published author and former editor of 'Shaman's Drum' magazine and Marin's own 'Artist Dialogue', Ms. Pavlinac's writing and photography have appeared in over 300 publications including as Principal Photography for Sanctuaries of the Goddess and Labyrinths, and in Time Magazine's Pictures of the Year. A charter member of the Marin Branch of the California Writers Club, her January presentation will introduce eight archetypal landscapes through photos and writing exercises. Come prepared to start the New Year writing!

Vividly described place is fundamental to communicating the significance, influence, and power of environment. Careful, complete, intentional depictions will strengthen your writing and delight your readers. As a writer, you select what to include, what to draw attention to, what to reinforce, and how to alter mood by what is changing in the landscape or by what is missing. Through guided imagery and stunning visuals, Ms. Pavlinac will guide us on a journey through the archetypal landscapes of the imagination, including Ocean, Desert, Mountain, Forest. We will briefly explore each territory's unique qualities and gifts, then return to a multimedia presentation of integrated prehistoric British landscapes with original slides and transformative music by Martin Gregory. The inner landscape is fed, caressed, refined, balanced, and strengthened by lucidly observing external landscapes.

A slide/music extravaganza created by Cindy Pavlinac & Martin Gregory

Using original slides and music to evoke the sense of place, we will journey to sacred landscapes in Europe and North America to follow a meandering path of ancient sanctuaries to modern expressions of labyrinths in places of nature, worship, and healing. This 1/2 hour visual feast is being produced specifically to debut at the Midwest Labyrinth Festival with new photography and music, and opens with prehistoric rock carvings in Scotland and travels through Roman meanders, English medieval village greens, and cathedral floor patterns up to the current interest in labyrinths in North America, visually juxtapositioning images to layer seemingly divergent expressions of the sacred across cultures and time. As the closing convocation, Labyrinth Dreamtime will give attendees inspiring images to help ground and integrate the Festival experience, encouraging hope, health, and sweet dreams in celebration of labyrinths.

A personal relationship to land and Nature is fundamental to our health and the well being of our psyche. By consciously mapping external sacred landscapes, we learn to recognize places of health and how to make whole our inner soul landscapes, and to awaken the inner dowser. To rest in a place of sacredness is to be whole and to be whole is to be healed.
